The Legacy Networks – 2G and 3G
Course Overview
This three-week, self-paced course provides an introductory overview of the technologies that underpin 2G and 3G mobile networks. Learners will explore the key concepts and principles of both generations, including the architecture, protocols, and services offered by these networks.
The course covers fundamental 2G technologies such as GSM and GPRS, as well as 3G technologies such as UMTS and HSPA. Learners will gain knowledge of the services and capabilities of both generations, including telephony, data services, and SMS. The course also delves into the circuit-switched and packet-switched cores of these networks, as well as the specifics of connecting to the network, making calls, and transferring data.

Course Objectives
- Understand the origins and early development of GSM and UMTS networks.
- Explore the evolution of data services from early circuit-switched data through to the emergence of packet-switched data with GPRS and later HSPA.
- Examine the transition from 2G to 3G, including technical advancements and new capabilities.
- Understand key procedures, including registration, call establishment and data transfer.
- Identify factors relating to the drawdown of legacy 2G and 3G networks and the impact on the current mobile landscape.

This course has been designed for a non-technical audience who require an overview of the foundational technologies upon which the cellular industry was built.
Course Structure and Study Time
This is a self-paced course and you will gain access to all of its content as soon as you complete your enrolment.
We estimate that it should not take you more than one hour of study time per week to complete the course in three weeks. You will have, however, six weeks from enrolment to complete the course.
Course Completion Certificate
To qualify for a course completion certificate, you will have to view all of the course content and correctly answer at least 80% of the questions in the test of understanding. You will have unlimited attempts to pass the test of understanding. You will also need to fill out the course survey.
