Course Overview

The introduction of 5G, both in the non-standalone and standalone derivates, has placed an additional burden on the packet transport networks that support the underlying data transfer taking place within the network.

This four-week, self-paced course seeks to outline the key considerations for the packet transport network when deploying 5G, including the areas of the network affected, the impact on the RAN and core, the technologies involved, and bandwidth requirements.

  • Examine the factors associated with 5G that influence and impact the 5G transport network.
  • Explain the disaggregation of the NG-RAN, with focus on why this is relevant to the 5G transport network.
  • Outline the contributing factors that the 5G radio is responsible for, including adaptive modulation, channel bandwidth, massive MIMO and carrier aggregation.
  • Explore the technologies associated with the NG-RAN and their influence on the transport network, including connection density, cell densification and user plane redundancy.
  • Focus on the impact network slicing and MEC have on the transport network.
  • Summarize the different network topographies associated with the 5G transport network.
  • Detail the role that OTN plays within the 5G transport network.
  • Examine the utilization of Ethernet based technologies in the 5G transport network, including time sensitive networking.
  • Show how MPLS has evolved for 5G packet transport networks, with focus on the use of segment routing.

Who Should Enrol on This Course?

This course has been designed for a technical audience who work directly on the packet transport network or have areas of responsibility within the RAN or the core network. Key job roles include core network engineers, system architects, transport network engineers, and voice core engineers.

Course Structure and Study Time

This is a self-paced course and you will gain access to all of its content as soon as you complete your enrolment. We estimate that it should not take you more than one hour of study time per week to complete the course in four weeks. You will have, however, seven weeks from enrolment to complete the course.

Course Completion Certificate

To qualify for a course completion certificate, you will have to view all of the course content and correctly answer at least 80% of the questions in the test of understanding. You will have unlimited attempts to pass the test of understanding. You will also need to fill out the course survey.
